I went a little nuts with JD’s Captain America party. In addition to the cake that gave me my 15 minutes of internet fame, I also made star chips (I cut stars out of multigrain tortillas, baked them until crispy, and sprinkled them with sea salt and smoked paprika) and shield pizzas (with concentric rings of toppings and pizza dough stars in the center). The chips were fabulous with guacamole. The pizzas would have tasted better if I’d used dough instead of pre-made pizza crusts, but I’m never able to roll my crusts out into anything even close to a circlular shape. (Batters, I’m good with. Doughs…are my nemesis. I once sprained my hand trying to roll out cannoli shells.)
I have an almost psychotic need to make EVERYTHING fit the theme of the party. When we threw a (Pixar) Cars party, we built a Leaning Tower of Tires out of mini donuts. When we threw a Spongebob party, I made “Krabby Patties” - crabcake burgers - and pink jellyfish-shaped jigglers. One of the moms at the Captain America party, commenting on the homemade pizzas, said that she wants to be like me when she grows up. Which I found hilarious, because she’s older than I am, and has an office job. I get paid to make cake.
